What To Know Before Purchasing A GPS Unit

One of the most popular technological items on the shelves these days is GPS systems. You can find these in the stores, in your rental cars, on your cellular phone, and in a number of other places. In short, GPS navigational units are everywhere these days. They are used in anti-theft systems, on vacations, and when enjoying certain sports outings. Whenever you want to know just where you are in the world, the GPS navigational system is your number one shot at learning this information.

GPS navigational units used to be quite expensive. However, these days it is possible to pick up a reasonably priced unit that is packed with enough features to offer you more than you may need. No matter how many features and how good a price is you need to ensure you know what you are looking for in a GPS navigational system. There are numerous choices, features, options, and prices for all of the units out there and if you do not know what to look for you just might get stuck with something that you do not need or cannot use.

While the GPS, which stands for Global Positioning System, has many uses, the primary use of the GPS is supposed to be to calculate or pinpoint the exact location a person is by using satellite signals. As the GPS learns where a person is then it can direct them to their point of destination.

Boat Captains use GPS navigational systems because they can tell the Captain how far from land they are sailing or how far they are from where they are going. They can also find out if they are right on course. Some Captains even use their GPS system to find and catch fish.

Other sporting enthusiasts that use GPS navigational systems include hikers, campers, backpackers, rock climbers, hunters, runners, and other enthusiasts who are active in the outdoors. Using a handheld GPS Unit in this environment can make things safer. You will not have to worry about getting lost and if you do, you will be given directions to the campsite, home, or any other location you wish to travel to on your trip.

With all of this in mind, it is important to know why you are planning to buy a GPS unit. GPS systems have numerous features but depending on your use of the GPS some features will be desired and others will not be necessary at all. For instance, if you are using it for sports purposes, like a runner might you would want something that is portable and small.

Additionally, you will want it to have weather resistance qualities. You should look for specific features for people that will be walking or on foot when using the system. For example, you might decide to get a GPS unit with a Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). WAAS is important for sporting trips because it increases your accuracy by at least 10 feet, which is a significant amount when in the wilderness.

When it comes to reception you want a number of channels. You should try to shoot for at least 12 channels. Your GPS navigational system is not going to work without an active signal. Having extra channels will ensure that no matter where you are you have a better chance of gaining the information that you need pertaining to your location.

Now if you are going to use your system in the car, you do not need something that is handheld and small. As you will not be holding it, weight and portability are not serious issues. Instead your prime goal should be finding something that transmits street maps in a clear fashion. If you purchase a non-handheld GPS system, you can have it mounted in your car. In these cases it generally goes on the dashboard. As it is inside the car you do not have to worry as much about durability and weatherproofing.

Once you know what kind of GPS navigational system you are looking for, you should determine what the fair prices are for the possible GPS units that suit your needs. As with all things, you will find some GPS systems are very low in price, while others cost thousands of dollars. Keep in mind the phrase, you get what you pay for, applies to GPS systems.

Do not attempt to buy a $100 GPS system (or less) and expect a feature packed system that is the best on the market. When it comes to the reasonably priced, better end GPS systems on the market you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $600.

The following features are important depending on the reason you are looking for a GPS navigational system.

· Back Tracking Capabilities

· Topographical Mapping

· Portable/Handheld

· Waterproof/Weatherproof

· Multiple Receivers (At least 12)

Marine GPS Units Have Been Quite Useful For Fisherman

Fishing used to be a means of survival, now it has become a popular sport and past time all around the world. From deep sea fishing to river and lake varieties, people enjoy fishing as a competitive sport, solo activity or family bonding experience, often during vacations and travel holidays. Auto GPS units have become popular with the technical advancements of vehicles. It used to be that auto GPS units were reserved for special government related, military and security systems. In our advanced world, it is now common for auto GPS units to come standard on most new vehicles.

Technology hasnt stopped with cars, though, fishing has become high tech, too. One such example of high technology fishing equipment is the GPS fish finder. This instrument helps fisherman find the animals they hunt, all credited to sonar transmitters. The word sonar is actually an acronym for Sound Navigation Ranging. Developed during World War Two to track enemy submarine fleets, a sonar has a transmitter, receiver, transducer and display, all of which translate to a device that is readable and serves the purpose of tracking various moving objects, in the case of fishing, fish.

A GPS fish finder locates swimming animals by sending an electrical impulse from the transmitter, converted into a sound wave by the transducer, which then travels through water en rout to a single fish or perhaps school of a specific species. Of course finding a school of fish is the more preferable of the two if you are a sports fisherman. As the sound wave continues to travel, it hits a fish or school or other swimming animal, bounces back and is displayed on the GPS fish finder screen.

These high tech electronics are often seen on television shows such as Discovery Channel, also on the same networks popular special programming Shark Week. Again, you dont have to be a commercial fisherman to have access to these devices anymore, now such systems are available to average Joe leisure fisherman.

While a marine GPS Unit is a handy toy to fish with, it still does not make a fish take the bait. It can find the fish, though, and so the marine GPS unit is a hit among serious competitors within the world of sports fishing. Just like driving your car to a grocery store you have never been to, with a marine GPS unit, a boat can get navigational direction to a body of waters specific coordinates so that bountiful fishing is more likely.

Ways in Which Osteopaths Differ From Gps

Fighting the Battle vs. Winning the War: Osteopath vs. GP

by Andrew Mitchell

We have all experienced it: we go to the doctor with back complaints, she diagnoses the problem, gives us some medical advice on what activities to avoid, along with a prescription for painkillers. We take the painkillers, follow the advice, and after some time the problem disappears. Or so we think. Two months later, our back gives way again as we attempt to lift some heavy luggage, and are forced to launch ourselves in the vicious doctor-drugs-advice cycle all over again.

Treating psychical injuries is  always an uphill struggle, unless you can find a way to eliminate the problem completely. This is where the role of an osteopath becomes central, since osteopaths don’t just treat the symptoms of a problem (as your local GP would), but will look at the entire body take the extra step of finding not only the cause of the ailment, but the cure as well. There are a range of other factors that differentiate an osteopathic doctor from a medical doctor:

1. Osteopaths are specialists in how the body works. Where medical doctors have a general overview of a large number of diseases, osteopaths are specifically trained in the musculoskeletal  system. They therefore have a greater understand of how one system within the body influences the other, giving them a diagnostic as well as therapeutic advantage over GPs.

2. Osteopaths are uniquely capable of using Osteopathic Manipulative Training (OMT) to diagnose an illness within the body. In involves the manipulation of certain muscles with the hands to encourage the blood to flow to necessary regions of the body, which gives the body a much more natural opportunity of healing itself.

3. Osteopaths also use their hands to manipulate the muscles in your body to cure the problem (not only to diagnose). Where Medical doctors will use recommend rest and prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, Osteopaths employ a much more natural approach. By loosening up muscle tensions and stimulating blood flow, they encourage the body to  engage in its own healing processes, leading to the elimination of the problem entirely.

4. Osteopaths looks at history of the problem, while doctors deal with the symptoms at hand. If a patient has a problem with his knee, for instance, a medical doctor would take a patient’s history through means of laboratory-type procedure, such as blood tests and other physical examinations. An osteopath would acquire this same history by asking  the patient whether the knee joints were stiff in the past, whether the pain becomes worse when the leg is placed in a different position, or if increase activity had worsened the problem in the past. By delving into a patient’s history, osteopathic doctors attempt to discover the root of the problem, and proceed to tackle it at the source.

The benefits of osteopathy are therefore numerous, but do they override the advantages of visiting your local GP? That is for you to decide. Depending on the nature of your ailment, you might even want to see both. The primary question you have to ask yourself whether your physical problem is a reoccurring one, and whether you want to treat the symptoms, or cure the disease.

GPS Fishing - Benefits Of Using GPS While Fishing

GPS as we all know is a global system that helps you pinpoint your position (or the position of the device) by satellite connections. You could use it any time of the day and in any condition weather.

The satellites in question go around the planet about twice a day, and this is how they help map the users’ exact position on the surface of the planet. Trigonometry calculations are automatically done to give an exact and accurate data of latitude and longitude. These satellites can work hand in hand with other satellites to provide information on speed and distance covered by the device.

When people are on a boat, they sometimes lose concentration while talking to their guests, mates etc and often wander off course. If you are on a fishing trip and are the navigator as well, there are good chances of this happening to you. Imagine letting go of the wheel when you see your rod bend a little. You run to the fishing area and take out a whopping snapper only to realize you’ve gone way off course and are lost. At such a point a global positioning system can instantly put you back on track. These devices are so easy to use that they are as compact as hand held radios today. Check out your boat magazines and bat store for more information on the different models of GPS currently available. Do get a good idea of the different functions that the device promises you, and a good salesman would no doubt be only too willing to share this information with you. Remember that a GPS system needs to be installed in your boat, so do ask the supplier to put you on to a electronics person to do this for you. Many retailers already have staff on their payroll to help you with this issue.

Remember it is foolish to depend solely on one tool to navigate while out on sea especially when you are on your own. Always make sure the radios working, and if you can get hold of a GPS system, why not have it installed as well? Finally, do keep in mind that any electronic tool ca go faulty. Before you go out sailing in the surf, be sure you have your old fashioned maps and compasses as well. A GPS system is highly accurate and time saving but you could still need to resort to the old fashioned compass and maps should the device fail to power up due to whatever reason. Electronics devices usually are damaged by heat, water and humidity. These are all available in excess on any boat, so it is not uncommon to hear of a damaged GPS system.

That said and done, it is not as if they fail all the time either. We are simply pointing out the importance of the basics, even if technology does promise to do our homework for us.

A Portable Handheld GPS - 7 Fun Ways to Use It

Have you been wanting to buy a portable handheld GPS or portable GPS navigator but just didn’t know quite what you were going to use it for? You may even have friends who own one, but you’re still unsure? These devices are great tools that provide a huge array of ways to get the most use out of them. Take a look at some of the fun (and practical) ways to make the most of these fun GPS gadgets:

1. Driving. This is one of the most common and practical ways a GPS device can be used for especially with with mapping software. The software allows you to navigate to and from specific destinations by choosing the shortest distance, or fastest routes. It can get you from one place to another and can even allow you to choose to avoid toll roads, avoid major highways, and have it recalculate to a different route than the one you are currently on. Finding necessities like fuel and food near your current location are also added perks. Do you need to go to the restroom? Yes, just check your GPS and you can find the closest the restroom! Now how cool is that?

2. Kayaking and Boating. Using a portable GPS navigator in boating is beneficial to mark favorite fishing spots, a favorite landing point, a great scenic view that you may want to return to, or to navigate to and from your Kayak put in spot. Once you get out in the water, it is easy to loose your way as it all looks the same unless you have a land mark. A GPS unit will allow you to navigate back the exact same way you went out. Most of the GPS systems also have a Man Overboard feature. If by chance someone falls overboard or you loose equipment (fishing rods, etc.) you can mark the spot and go exactly back to the same location.

3. Hiking. A portable handheld GPS can be used in hiking to mark a trail head, a favorite location along a well-used trail, mark your campsite, trail tracking through the backlog, navigate toward previous marked points, and track your speed, distance, elevation, and much more. A GPS in the wilderness is almost a must and it can actually save your life. There are many stories of hikers getting injured on their journey and by being able to provide the coordinates of their location, rescue help found them quickly.

4. In an Airplane. Only for fun. While flying commercial , you can track the distance to your destination, see how high you are flying, how fast the plane is traveling, and even where you are currently flying over. Make sure to adhere to any regulations about portable electronic devices.

5. Geocaching. A worldwide high tech game of hide and seek, geocaching is a great hobby. Players use their GPS to find treasures, or geocaches, hidden by others with user-posted latitude and longitude coordinates. This recreational sport has only been around for a short time, but is definitely growing in popularity. There are probably a few geocaches within only a mile or two of where you live!

6. Vacation and Tourism. While on vacation, a portable handheld GPS is a great way to visit places that may be of special interest, find local restaurants, and to mark places that you would like to remember, possibly return to, or recommend to others. It’s also great for finding lodging and other amenities near your location, if you are traveling on a whim.

7. Biking. The use of a portable GPS navigator is a great way to keep track of statistics like distance biked, how far to a destination, current speed, average speed, amount of time you’ve been moving, and amount of time spent stopped. Whether you are a serious biker or a casual rider, this is a great way to keep track of your progress.

The possibilities are virtually endless for using a portable GPS navigator. These are just a few ideas. Once you start using one, you’ll wonder why you waited so long, and how you managed without it. There are many different styles, so you are able to get one that fits your needs and budget.
