Types of GPS Systems

The global positioning system (GPS) is a very accurate and sensitive equipment to monitor the movements of any object and to provide needful information to the receiver. Originally used by the US Defence Department to monitor the movements of the ships or planes and also to detect encroachments of their sea or air space, this utility was later made available for public use. The system receives signals from satellites and provides the user with details about the position of any object and the timing of any event. There are three phases like Space, Control and User. The Space and Control sectors are under the supervision of the Government, but user facility has been made free from Government control.

Many private enterprises are manufacturing and marketing the GPS systems for commercial use. Today it is widely used to monitor the movements of vehicles as well as to locate stolen vehicles. GPS are also used to track shipments of goods. The system is being used to prevent crimes like hijacking and kidnapping which are widespread. In modern life the GPS is used to locate missing persons during travels. In racing and similar types of sports activities, GPS has become an effective tool to locate and retrieve vehicles as well as the persons involved. Educational and commercial uses of GPS are becoming popular due to the efficiency and accuracy of the system. The GPS plays a vital role in the information technology for mapping details of locations from websites. The antenna on the receiver picks up satellite signals which then calculate the distance between the location and the receiver. The system is used in aircrafts to provide automatic navigation and enable them to fly in the right course.

As GPS has many applications, those who want to use the system should choose the right device to obtain required benefits from it. Portable GPS with or without mapping facility are available. The device without mapping facility is cheaper than its counterpart with mapping. The portable facility is powered by batteries whereas vehicle mounted GPS will have 12 V wiring with antenna installed inside the vehicle. There are GPS which can be linked to the laptops. Varieties of GPS are in use today. Car GPS systems, handheld GPS, car tracking system and map based navigation system are some of them.

Internet is a good source to seek information about the GPS devices that are used for diverse purposes. The shoppers should locate a reputed dealer to avoid ending up with substandard products. Special features or requirements are to be specially mentioned while placing orders. Many online dealers offer free shipping and cheaper price tags with exemptions from the taxes. The buyers should take care to get the system installed only by the manufacturers or their authorized dealers to avail warranty benefits.

GPS Systems – Who Can Use It?

In the 1980′s GPS was made available for civilian use through an executive order. Till then it was restricted primarily for military use as mentioned before. The civilians could use the low power radio signals emitted by the satellites in the L1 frequency. The other L2 frequency was reserved for military use. Also, the use of GPS was restricted through “Selective Availability” clause of the US military.

Explosion in Commercial use:

With the removal of this clause the use of GPS exploded. A variety of applications were found for GPS. From tracking your pet to keeping track of children and elderly people, from finding your location in remote camp site and finding your way back to civilization, from seeking road side assistance for a vehicle breakdown to tracking an emergency vehicle for an accident victim, 911 to fire engine, public transportation keeping track of their vehicles and courier companies keeping track of your packages and their drivers, companies managing their logistics more efficiently to finding a hidden treasure through a global fun game. GPS has spawned a whole new of world of applications that was probably never considered by the makers of the system.

Military Use:

The GPS designed mainly for the military helped the troops to find their way in countries has remote has Afghanistan and Iraq. During the operation desert storm the US troops relied heavily on GPS systems to find their way in the remote, featureless deserts of Iraq and Kuwait. It helps in pinpointing targets, troop deployment and many more applications that we are aware of.

Is It FREE?

GPS is available for free. After all it’s your tax money which paid for it in the first place.

Is It Reliable?

The US defense controls and uses it so it has to be reliable. The system of 24 satellites are designed in such a way that at any point a GPS receiver on earth receives signals from at least 4 satellites if not more. If one or more satellites fails then they are 4 back up satellites to take their place. And the US defense budget provides for the replacement of satellites as and when a satellite goes out of service.

Ground control stations on the Earth continuously monitor and keep the data on the satellites updated. When the satellites go out of orbits the master control station sends commands to bring it back into orbit. Backup boosters and battery on board the satellite help to keep the systems working in times of need like during a solar eclipse or when the orbital correction is required.

Locate Fishing Spots Using GPS

Before technology evolved to what it is now, fishermen relied on paper charts and instincts in order to find a great fishing spot where they can catch some great fish. Paper charts were the only guide a fishermen could carry with him during a fishing trip. Today however, with the improvement in technology paper charts are now stowed into drawers because of the rise of such gadgets such as GPS chart plotters.

GPS or Global Positioning Systems have helped fishermen tremendously with navigating through waters. Not only that, these GPS systems have also helped fishermen find great fishing spots. It’s pretty safe to say that these GPS systems have drastically changed the way fishermen fish these days. Not everyone have been sold to these GPS systems though, there are those traditional fishermen who still rely solely on paper charts. There are also some who are reluctant to get these installed because they think that this is a complicated piece. Though it does require some getting used to, it is still a very helpful device that will make your fishing trips a whole lot easier and stress free.

Now you might be wondering how does a GPS work and how can it help you navigate and find a good fishing spot? GPS basically rely on satellites for the information that they provide. These satellites go around the globe at least twice a day and transmit back to earth any information needed. Once these signals are in, these are then used in order to come up with an exact location of the user by means of pinpointing and triangulation of the exact spots.

GPS as a navigational device for fishing can provide very accurate information because of the multi-channel designs that they come with. A standard GPS fish finder can detect and provide accurate information to depths of up to 15 meters. As mentioned earlier, aside from accurate information, they can also help any fisherman locate some great fishing hot spots near their area that may not be available on older charts. You also have a choice to share it with your friends who are planning to fish or are on another boat.

Truly, technology has improved the lives of fishermen around. Gone are the days when you have to pull out those old charts. Fishing with the GPS system, all the information you need are available all at the touch of a button. It has a lot useful features that will make your fishing adventures fun, safe, and a great success!

What Are the Best Portable GPS Systems?

If you’re interested in what are the best portable GPS systems, then you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been covering the GPS marketplace for the past few years. I’ve written literally hundreds of web articles about GPS devices and also written copy for several sites.

As far as the best portable GPS systems, this year we’re seeing some really neat technical advances from giants like Garmin. We’re also seeing the big three, Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom dominate the market place even more than in past years.

Right now, I would have to give the top picks all to Garmin and TomTom. Magellan certainly makes a find product, but they’ve not really introduced much that’s truly innovative over the past year. Garmin and TomTom have, which is why I’m going to focus on them for the best portable GPS unit. Garmin first.

Garmin has made some really neat innovations on their GPS systems over the past couple of years. For instance, they have what they call a predictive technology, which lets the device lock onto the satellite signals faster. Also, they’ve got a nice line of voice recognition GPS systems-the nĂ¼vi 800′s. I also, like their 1300 line a lot.

But Garmin’s not only for upper end buyers. Their lower priced models, the 2X5 line, have features that we would have seen on only the most expensive models two years ago. You can get a very nice GPS system, for instance, from Garmin for $100-excellent maps, and plenty of bells and whistles.

We can’t talk about the best portable GPS systems, however, without including TomTom. They’ve made some excellent strides in their user generated maps. But frankly, what I really like is their entry level model called the Tom Tom EASE. What’s so cool about the TomTom EASE is its ease of use. Two taps and it’s on and working to show you where you are. At what TomTom is charging for it, it’s almost a no-brainer.

These are my picks for the best portable GPS systems. Hopefully, this will help you figure out what you should buy.

Do Marine GPS Systems Work?

Do marine GPS’s really work? We sure hope so! After all, being stranded in the middle of Nowheresville USA is still preferable to being lost out at sea. When you are lost out at sea, you are on borrowed time. Food and water is limited and so is battery power. This is why a marine GPS is so important. How does the GPS work?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, an invention by the U.S. Department of Defense. There are over 30 orbiting satellites in medium earth which all communicate to microwave signals to these GPS units in order to determine their location. Additionally, GPS users can also be given the time of day, velocity rate and other factors relating to one’s surroundings. There are GPS’s for marine travel just as there are systems for land travel. Marine GPS’s are fairly easy to use and install, even when compared to radars. Marine global positioning units provide map and location data so that boaters can find their way back to civilization.

What are some of the extras that marine GPS’s bring boaters and yachters? The system is largely the same, though various add-on features will complement the sea voyage. For example, most people are accustomed to viewing GPS systems inside cars. If you use a GPS system on boat then you will probably be using it from the top floor of the craft, which means it will be in direct view of the sun. Marine GPS units usually have a special coated screen that allows easy viewing even in plain view of the sun.

Water splashing and rain are big risks for GPS systems, so waterproof or weather-resistant GPS is an important add-on feature. (Though you might also buy a marine GPS already built as a waterproof device) Weather resistant systems are usually not fully water proof. However, waterproofed GPS systems are so well constructed that they can actually be dropped into a large body of water and still continue to function!

Marine global positioning systems give you data that is relevant to your boating position. Whereas traffic global posititoning systems bring you traffic updates, marine GPS systems give you tide information, as well as prime fishing times for your local area. Marine units are also more powerful than standard GPS systems, since they actually can keep track of multiple targets that are within a close distance to your vessel. Other systems have multiple channels and databases. You will also find a variety of physical designs for GPS units, like ergonomic and lightweight systems. GPS units may even have larger than average buttons so they can be used by boaters wearing heavy gloves! This will be of great importance on a cold and rainy day where your thinking ability has already been taxed.

How much can you expect to pay for marine systems? Some are cheap, as inexpensive as $100, while others may soar to over $1,000. One important thing to remember when shopping for GPS systems is to choose a system with a long lasting battery and bring several battery backups! For more information on marine GPS systems look online for a particular product and read some reviews.

GPS Systems – An Overview

Global Positioning System is referred as GPS is a device, which gives the most accurate and most sophisticating navigation system. They are generally used to find your destination giving you the right direction, while you are travelling to unknown places. Earlier, they were used by the defence people to perform military operations, weapon systems and tracking missiles. In a short span of time they were used by the people of all modes for navigation while they travel.

In the present day, they are used in airplanes, ships, trucks and cars for easy navigation of the route to reach the destination faster than before. The three main components that are required in the Satellite navigation system are the satellite, monitor stations and the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver is a computing device, which receives signals from the satellite and processing them to determine the location. The components that a GPS receiver contains are an antenna, processors, an accurate clock and a display screen. Sat Nav systems are available in both portable and mountable designs.

In the early models, the GPS receiver can receive the signals from only four channels, now through the advancement of the technology; the present navigational systems have the capacity to receive more than 15 channels. These receivers are designed in in-built models and hand-held models or portable models. For frequent travelling uses the portable model suits best because it is compact and easy-to-carry. Apart from these components, some of the other features that have to be noted are the maps, display, voice instructions, Wi-fi connectivity and Bluetooth and the entertainment options.

Before buying a GPS unit, the main feature that has to be noted is the hard drive capacity. If a hard drive capacity is high, the unit has a large memory which helps you to store more maps and other data. The display of the GPS unit has to be big to view the places clearly without any disturbance. The main source that a navigation system has to contain is the map. The GPS units which have been introduced recently comes with a preloaded maps of your region, if you require a map of other places they can be loaded to the unit by a CD or through a website.

Mostly an SD card is used in satellite navigation systems to expand the memory of the unit to store more data you require. In the present day situation, the requirement of a navigational system has been increased, that helps you to reach your destination correctly, even if you are new to the place. Some GPS systems come with a touch screen option, which easily helps the user to navigate. With all these incredible features the GPS weighs just few ounces, which easily fits your pocket.

Do I Need a GPS System?

As far as technological trends go, GPS systems have hit an all time high in terms of popularity. More people are trying out GPS all the time and discovering that they love the useful, functionality of the system. Deciding to purchase a GPS system is a personal choice but it is one that should be based on facts and not just consumer trend. Buying technology should be about what it can do for you, not how many of your friends have it or what the news says about it. Get informed about GPS systems because they are not all the same. Make the best choice for you.

People who spend a lot of their time driving in relation to their business may find a GPS unit to be an exceptionally worthy investment. When you have to go to your clients, there can be a lot of maps involved. Eliminate that completely by having a unit that can direct you there step by step. Most systems have a voice feature that speaks to you so that you can keep your eyes on the road and not be staring dangerously at the screen. When you don’t have to find your client on your own, you can get down to business much quicker.

A GPS unit might be a great choice for those that enjoy taking road trips and discovering new towns and cities. Find your destination with no worries and make great timing when you don’t get lost or have to stop for directions. Likewise, those that simply feel they have poor navigational skills may benefit from having a GPS system point them in the right direction.

Though GPS systems come with a variety of features, there are some that keep track of all of the information involved in your trip. From directions to the exact number of feet until your turn, you can get a lot of great perks with a GPS unit. They do vary so you may want to look at more than one type. Of course, those with more features will be higher in price but they are often worth the investment.

If you think keeping track of every mile and minute to your destination sounds appealing or helpful then you should look into various brands of GPS systems. It’s not something you want to rush out and buy the first one you see. You should put in some consumer research time to ensure that you are getting what you pay for. Double check warranty and return information as well just in case there are any problems.

A great GPS unit will even be able to track the altitude that you are driving at. It can be a really neat item to assist you as you travel. However, it is technology so be warned that it can fail and have errors as well. They have been known to give incorrect information at times though that is rare. As a driver, take care not to become so distracted that you drive off the road or cause an accident. It can happen. Whether or not you need a GPS should be based on your personal driving needs and what you want to get out of every trip.
