Based on the popular GPS 12XL, the GPS 12CX offers more than just a pretty picture. The LCD screen on Garmin’s new GPS 12CX takes handheld navigation to another level. Characters, icons, numbers, and letters are crisply rendered in any of three bright colors: red, green, and blue. These colors don’t wash out in bright sunlight and are perfect for sorting out map pages cluttered with waypoints and tangled track logs.The 12CX’s powerful 12 parallel channel receiver gives you continuous position updates whether you’re cruising the placid surface of a lake or bushwhacking in the outback. It even boasts vastly improved battery life - up to 50 percent over the respectable 24 hours of its predecessor - in case your adventures take you farther a field than you planned.Garmin handhelds are renowned for their ease of use, and the GPS 12CX is no different. The new keypad layout includes separate “Zoom In” and “Zoom Out” keys for simple manipulation of the moving map page, and the enhanced graphic interface organizes 1000 waypoints into an easily accessible tab-file system. This unit also comes with a full complement of advanced software features such as a point database of cities, TracBack navigation, and graphic steering guidance.The device comes with with the North America City Point Database that includes the United States, Alaska, Canada, northern most portion of Mexico, and the majority of the Caribbean, and covers the majority of W180 to W20 Longitude, 0 to N75 Latitude.

Don't do it...
I'm a wildlife biologist in Montana, and use GPS units daily. I originally purchased 5 of these units for my research, and had 3 units malfunction -- with three different problems. One would shut off if tapped, one would shut off if you hit the page button, and the light stopped working on a third. Because of Amazon's great service, and my need for quick and compatible replacements, I ordered three identical units to replace the broken ones. I just had a fourth unit die -- the same problem .... What you see, is what you get
I received the Garmin 12CX for Christmas, replacing my older Magellan 2000XL. The Garmin is definitely a more versatile unit, having the ability to upload/download topo map waypoints and routes. However, the color display is difficult to read unless facing the light source. I am also not completely satisfied with the contrast adjustments for the colors. When you get a good contrast with one, the others seem to be "washed out". I would like to see more icon symbols that are related to hiking .... Read more
